OPTICAL ART
6th Grade Art students started the year with several projects based on optical illusions. We discussed color theory, and how using warm colors against cool colors along with a combination of curved and straight lines can really make things pop. Check out these mind bending waves, cones, and spheres!

Oil Pastel Apples
For this project, art students practiced different drawing techniques while also having a healthy snack. First, we practiced our observational drawing skills by drawing different fruits from real life, taking bites or cutting slices and then drawing them again. We tried again by drawing different photographs of apples using a measured, grid technique. Here are some outstanding results!

Pet Project
Art students practiced mixed-media art making techniques while learning about social issues in our community. Each student designed a pet silhouette with complex patterns, and added a significant word in tooled metal. These artworks were made to represent the plight of shelter animals in our area, and to allow students to express what their own pets meant to each of them. Noah's Ark Animal Sanctuary was kind enough to let us display some of our artworks along with some 7th grade works at their downtown location for folks to view during Fall Art Scene. A heartfelt project for sure.

Winter Birch Trees
As we settled into Winter, art students studied composition, perspective, and watercolor techniques while creating beautiful, birch tree paintings. We continued to explore color theory, and students were urged to be selective in their color choices to represent a particular mood. To create a more realistic view, students were encouraged to place larger trees in front, and smaller in back. Here are some beautiful, moody samples:

Plush Creatures
Students put thinking caps on their heads and band aids on their fingertips, as they learned basic hand sewing skills and creative character development. Each student had to come up with their own unique character, complete with sketches, a name, and a special list of characteristics before they sewed them up into cute creatures. A frustrating but favorite project for sure! Check out these cuties:

Ceramic Sea Creatures
6th grade art students tried their hand at ceramic hand building skills while creating adorable, and unique sea creatures out of pinched, natural clay forms. Fired pieces were then carefully painted with acrylic paint and metallic powdered pigments. Amazing results!
